VIP Behind the Scenes Tour
Beat the crowds and receive a special tour of areas on board HORNET that have not yet been opened to the public or have limited access during the day:

Spaces that may be Included Are:
Combat Information Center (CIC)
Message Center (Radio Central)
Forward Diesel Machine Room
Ship’s Main Laundry
Special Weapons Storage & Work Space
Brig
Catapult Machinery Room
Cobbler Shop
Dental Spaces
Following the guided tour, explore the rest of the museum on your own. (The guided portion of the tour lasts at least four hours and may vary from the above itinerary.)

VIP Behind the Scenes Tours are usually held the third Saturday of the month.

Rates
$50.00 per adult ($40 for members – please bring your membership card for verification). Advance payment required.

Special Notifications
This guided tour begins at 9:00am in the morning and runs at least four hours, after which visitors may remain on the ship for the rest of the day.
Everybody must bring their own flashlight; HORNET does not supply individual lights.
Cameras are welcome, but must have a neck strap.
Tour participants must wear comfortable shoes. Heels and open-toed shoes are not allowed.
Tour participants must be in good physical health as there will be lots of walking and climbing.
Due to safety reasons, children 12 and under are not allowed on VIP Restoration Behind the Scenes Tour.
Tour space is limited to 20 people.

The USS Hornet (CV-8) loaded on the B-25 Army bombers for this special mission right here at Alameda Naval Air Station before heading out to the Pacific and history.

Chuck Myers will be giving the presentation. Please note the time is 11 AM for this presentation.

Chuck’s Bio:

BA in History. Commissioned in the Navy after finishing OCS.
Served on USS Yorktown as a JO (CVS-10)
Qualified as an OOD-F as an ensign
Served 5 years in the Navy
14+ years as a docent on the Hornet.

This aircraft is from the Pensacola National Naval Aviation Museum. The aircraft will be arriving at the Oakland Airport during the week prior to this event and then will be brought aboard the USS Hornet, reassembled and put on display!

We are going to thank the donors who made this possible-especially the USS Hornet’s own docents who led the fundraising charge for us to be able to bring this amazing aircraft to the USS Hornet. We will also have a few special speakers.

This F/A-18C was one of two VFA-81 Sunliners who shot down a pair of MIG-21 Fishbeds on the 1st day of Operation Desert Storm on January 17th, 1991. The pilot that day was CAPT Nick “Mongo” Mongillo, USN (ret.).

Night Ops: Live-Aboard Overnight Adventure
Ever wonder how an aircraft carrier works? Come aboard and spend the night living with history on the ultimate overnight adventure and find out how USS Hornet’s sailors lived and worked on this city at sea! Designed for ages 7 and up, this is a perfect group activity for scouts, youth groups, schools, friends, and families!

During the Night Ops Overnight you will tour key areas of the ship to see various spaces and systems and discuss the history, science, and engineering behind them. As you move around the ship, you can participate in several hands-on science stations and demonstrations interspersed with seeing sailors’ living spaces! The experience includes:

Sleeping in restored, original sailor sleeping compartments
Enjoying Dinner and Breakfast in the original Enlisted Crew’s Mess
Learning about this famous aircraft carrier’s daring exploits
Touring key areas of the ship and the historic naval aircraft on display
Learning about NASA’s Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 missions that put the first men on the moon
Earning an overnight crew Patch & Certificate
Ample Free Parking
All Overnight Guests must be at least 7 years old

Come aboard and spend the night living with history with the ultimate overnight adventure! The Museum’s Live-Aboard Overnight Program was one of the first of its kind and a model for overnight Museum adventures.

Explore the decks of this famous World War II ship from the Captain’s Bridge to our Sickbay as you walk in the footsteps of astronauts and heroes aboard the ship that proudly recovered the first men to walk on the Moon, the Apollo 11 and 12 lunar mission astronauts.

The Live-Aboard program includes an evening tour, breakfast and dinner in the original Enlisted Mess, late-night ghost stories, and more! The program is suitable for all age ranges and its standard single-night stays are divided into:

Family/Small Group Live-Aboard: For individual families who wish to stay aboard.
Youth Group Live-Aboard: For organized youth groups such as scouts and schools.
Adult Group Live-Aboard: For organized adult clubs, work groups, or groups of friends.
