African Americans have been part of the United State’s military struggles since before its independence. From enslaved Black soldiers participating in the American Revolution and Civil War to the fight for civil rights in the 1950s and beyond, Black service members have earned valor and distinction in service of their country. This exhibit is a collaboration with the Walking Ghosts of Black History and the USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum.

Rotating Exhibits https://uss-hornet.org/exhibits/rotating-exhibits/ Thu, 18 Jul 2024 14:20:31 +0000 https://uss-hornet.org/exhibits/rotating-exhibits/ The Exhibits team uses extra space on the Hangar Deck for temporary exhibits. These exhibits are often associated with a historical event, commemorative date or other special events. These temporary exhibits are sometimes added to permanent exhibits elsewhere on the ship once their exhibition is complete.

Currently we have an exhibit of the ‘Pit Sword”, short for Pitometer.

Bay Area at War https://uss-hornet.org/exhibits/bay-area-at-war/ Thu, 18 Jul 2024 14:19:58 +0000 https://uss-hornet.org/exhibits/bay-area-at-war/ How local communities worked, fought, and lived during World War II.. As we live our lives today, it is easy for us to think events and circumstances we experience are unique and difficult. This exhibit shows the struggle and determination of everyday citizens to live their lives and contribute to their community. The people, equipped with tools and a unifying goal, accomplished so much by building ships, defending our coast, and rationing precious resources. However, we must also acknowledge that inequality and injustice were present in the Homefront, such as the Port Chicago Disaster and Japanese Interment through Executive Order 9066.

Special Thanks To The Rosie the Riveter / WWII Home Front Museum and Frederick Klink and the SS Red Oak Victory Historic Ship
